Green Homes: The Future of Real Estate
A majority of Australians highly value energy efficiency in their housing choices, as revealed by the PropTrack Origin Australian Home Energy Report. The recent Residential Audience Pulse Survey highlighted that over half of the respondents see energy efficiency as crucial, recognizing its potential to enhance property value. Australians are willing to invest more in homes with energy-efficient features, with solar power being the most desired. Adelaide leads with a 91% preference for solar panels, followed by Brisbane (79%), Melbourne (77%), and Sydney (73%). Other sought-after features include window glazing and high-quality insulation, whereas greywater systems, specific building materials, and rainwater tanks are less likely to add value.
In Brisbane and Sydney, 8% of respondents are willing to pay a premium of 5% or more for homes with solar panels. While interest in home batteries and electric vehicle chargers is slightly lower, there is still a significant willingness to pay more for these features. The primary motivation for this emphasis on energy efficiency is the desire to reduce utility bills, with three-quarters of respondents expressing this motive. Additionally, many Australians want to reduce their carbon footprint, lessen environmental impact, and avoid bill-shock. Overall, the findings indicate a strong understanding among Australians of the value of energy-efficient homes and their willingness to invest in them.
